The automotive industry is currently undergoing profound change. The ongoing digitalisation of vehicles poses key challenges for the entire industry and requires even closer cooperation between car manufacturers, their suppliers and factory equipment suppliers. Software development based on free and open-source software (FOSS) enables companies to save costs and learn from each other through standardised solutions. The automotive industry is already implementing this collaborative approach. This form of cooperation not only offers advantages to all companies involved, but can also strengthen Baden-Württemberg's position as an automotive hub and its leading role in Germany and Europe in the long term.
Against this backdrop, a sprint mission for collaborative software development was initiated under the leadership of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism. The aim of the mission was to develop concrete recommendations for action and implementation measures to sustainably strengthen cooperation in the Baden-Württemberg automotive industry with the help of open-source software. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular should be able to benefit more from the advantages and opportunities offered by FOSS in the future. Another key component is the establishment of a new ‘free and open source software community’ in Baden-Württemberg. This community will be used to specifically involve small and medium-sized enterprises so that they can learn about the advantages of joint software development and, under guidance, implement processes and standards for efficient and legally compliant use. The continuation of the Sprint mission and the establishment of the community are being supported by the start-up and coordination office ‘Automotive Software Collaboration BW – The FOSS-Länd Community’ at e-mobil BW and by the partners of the SDA.
