Smart City Data Labs@BW

Municipalities in Baden-Württemberg are facing numerous challenges these days: congested roads due to high levels of parking search traffic, air pollution, the formation of heat islands in summer and city centres with a declining quality of life. All examples are directly or indirectly related to movement patterns in the city and the associated land use.

The Smart City Data Labs@BW project offers a solution to these challenges. Solutions are to be found by setting up a series of laboratories as an agile service centre for data-based urban planning with the help of open source and digital tools.

The aim is to create an objective basis for decision-making in the event of conflicts of use and interest. Another aim is to learn a data-driven way of thinking in the digital transformation of municipalities.

The target groups are municipal managers, administrative staff from the areas of urban and transport planning, tourism and business development, public order offices, municipal waste disposal companies and climate protection managers. Related stakeholder groups such as digital solution providers, catering, retail, associations and voluntary work are also addressed.

New data applications are being developed and trialled in laboratory series with six selected municipalities. The project also focuses on transferring the developed data applications to other cities in Baden-Württemberg.
