Kompetenznetz Klima Mobil – Boldly moving forward with climate protection in communal transport

Kompetenznetz Klima Mobil advises and supports communities and municipalities in Baden-Württemberg that want to break new ground in climate protection in transport. In the past three years, the fields of action have been the privileges for environmentally friendly traffic, parking space management, the conversion of road space, traffic calming, and road space design. Following the successful pilot phase, the competence network is now being expanded.

The target group of the competence network's activities are the communities and municipalities in Baden-Württemberg. No one knows more about municipal traffic problems and approaches to solve them than the experts in the municipalities themselves. Learning from and with each other is one of the core activities of the competence network and is ensured by the establishment and maintenance of a municipal network. More than 120 municipalities in Baden-Württemberg are already members of the network of municipalities. In addition, the competence network has supported 15 model municipalities over the past three years to enable them to adopt and implement appropriate climate protection measures in the transport sector.

The competence network was launched on the initiative of the Ministry of Transport by Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) in cooperation with Klimaschutz- und Energieagentur Baden-Württemberg (KEA-BW). The project is financed with 2.3 million euros federal funds and with a comparable amount from the state, which was approved by the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg. The project under the national climate protection initiative (NKI) ends in August 2022.

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport will continue the Klima Mobil competence network from September 2022 including a strategic realignment and expand the Klima Mobil team in the New Mobility division at NVBW to act as an innovation and expert agency as well as a statewide, central point of contact for all issues relating to climate protection in transport.

The focus is on a central contact point for municipalities for all questions regarding climate protection in transport, with a specific focus on climate protection-oriented transport planning - in particular climate mobility plans and action plans for mobility, climate, and noise protection - and a specific focus on road upgrades with a view to parking. Funding is provided by the state as approved by the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.
