Kompetenznetz Klima Mobil – Boldly moving forward with climate protection in communal transport

Kompetenznetz Klima Mobil was initiated to advise and support communities and municipalities in Baden-Württemberg on their way to break new ground in climate protection in transport. In the past three years, the fields of action have focused on giving priority to environmentally friendly traffic, parking space management and the conversion of road space, as well as traffic calming and road space design. Following the successful pilot phase, the competence network is now being expanded.

The target group of the competence network's activities are the communities and municipalities in Baden-Württemberg. No one knows more about municipal traffic problems and approaches to solve them than the experts in the municipalities themselves. Learning from and with each other is one of the core activities of the competence network and is ensured by the establishment and maintenance of a municipal network. More than 120 municipalities in Baden-Württemberg are already members of the network of municipalities. In addition, the competence network has supported 15 model municipalities over the past three years to enable them to adopt and implement appropriate climate protection measures in the transport sector.

The competence network was launched on the initiative of the Ministry of Transport by Nahverkehrsgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (NVBW) in cooperation with Klimaschutz- und Energieagentur Baden-Württemberg (KEA-BW). The project was funded with 2.3 million euros from the federal administration and with a comparable amount from the state, which was approved by the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg. The project under the national climate protection initiative  (NKI) ended in August 2022.

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport has continued the Klima Mobil competence network since September 2022 including a strategic realignment, and is expanding the Klima Mobil team in the New Mobility division at NVBW to act as an innovation and expert agency as well as a statewide point of contact for all issues relating to climate protection in transport. In this regard, they can rely on the experience, tools and network from the project phase.

The current focus of the advisory services is on climate protection-oriented transport planning - in particular the instruments of climate mobility planning and action plans for mobility, climate and noise protection - and the topic of climate protection & parking with all aspects regarding parking space management, redesign of parking areas and parking space control. After the end of the project phase, funding has been provided by the state as approved by the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.
