Analysis of regional innovation systems and transformation challenges in Baden-Württemberg

At the regional level, the transformation is evident in varying degrees of intensity and with different facets. While the focus in individual rural and urban districts in Baden-Württemberg is on the drive system transition, other regions are concentrating on automated driving, smart production or hydrogen technologies. As part of the mission ‘Analysis of Regional Innovation Systems and Transformation Challenges in Baden-Württemberg’, e-mobil BW GmbH and the RegioClusterAgentur jointly conducted an analysis based on the RIT Monitor – the Regional Innovation and Transformation System for selected mobility topics. The aim was to identify the areas of transformation and application in which the regions are already positioned today and could develop in the future. Application areas in the transformation fields of green & smart mobility, smart production and the green economy were examined and strengths and potential were identified with the help of an AI-supported analysis of regionalised data sources.

In addition, the results of the ‘Structural Study BW 2023’ and the study ‘Economic Significance of Regional Automotive Networks in Germany’ were incorporated, which describe the profound structural change in the automotive industry due to electrification, digitalisation and automation. The regions of Stuttgart, Heilbronn-Franken, Northern Black Forest, Middle Upper Rhine, Rhine-Neckar, Black Forest-Baar-Heuberg and Lake Constance-Upper Swabia are particularly affected. At the same time, these areas already account for a significant proportion of employment in the key opportunity areas of electrification, automation and networking.

The results of the mission provide a sound basis for developing appropriate measures to make the mobility industry sustainable, promote future-proof solutions and support regional transformation networks in Baden-Württemberg in further developing their strategies.
