PiLaTes: Pilot Charging and Refueling Infrastructure for Long-haul Trucks

The aim of the PiLaTes project network - Pilot Charging and Hydrogen Refueling Station for Trucks Baden-Württemberg - is to plan, construct and operate a pilot station for high-performance fast-charging and for refueling battery-electric and fuel cell trucks with gaseous and liquid hydrogen at a suitable location in Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the project is to answer questions regarding the subsequent state-wide expansion of the infrastructure for climate-friendly trucks in Baden-Württemberg. Besides the development of criteria for identifying a site and a sample layout, the experience gained in the process including approval procedures is to facilitate the future development of further infrastructure.The state government intends to support the project as part of the Strategic Dialogue for the Automotive Sector in Baden-Württemberg.

Three project phases were envisaged::

  • Pre-project (VorPiLaTes): Feasibility study for the realization project (start in Q3 2022)
  • Realization project: construction and operation of the first site
  • Scale-up project: options for the state-wide expansion of infrastructure for climate-friendly long-haul trucks in Baden-Württemberg

The preliminary project VorPiLaTes was completed at the end of 2022.

Participants in the project are: Daimler Truck, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg, Fraunhofer IAO, Fraunhofer ISE, Fraunhofer ISI, H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, Iveco, Netze BW.

The realization project is funded within the framework of a "Charging and hydrogen tank infrastructure for long-haul trucks (LWT)". The call was issued in May 2023, and the selection of the projects is expected by the end of 2023.
